About CitySprouts
The CitySprouts mission is to cultivate curiosity and wonder for all children with hands-on
science learning through urban gardening. Established in 2001, CitySprouts’ in-school and
out-of-school time programs currently operate in partnership with 24 Boston and Cambridge
public schools.
The Position
The Youth Program Manager oversees CitySprouts’ afterschool and five-week summer
programs. This position reports to the Program Director. The program manager will have the
opportunity to work with the Program Director in determining ways to expand and deepen the
impact of our middle school program.
Key Responsibilities:
Program management
● Oversee design and preparation for CitySprouts’ summer program, including recruitment, matriculation, supplies and sites
● Oversee hiring and training of summer and afterschool staff
● Manage staff to ensure a fun, safe, engaging experience for youth
● Help design a structure to support a robust and growing afterschool program
● Contribute to development and revision of program curriculum
● Assist with tracking of program data and impact
● Ensure that all programming supports and reflects the CitySprouts' commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
Partnership building
● Identify and cultivate relationships with schools, community partners, alumni
● Build connections to Boston and Cambridge peer organizations in the youth development space
● Work with the Program Director and Development Director on grant reporting
Gardening
● Support youth in learning gardening skills and knowledge, and cultivate an interest in gardening
● Assist the team in maintaining schoolyard learning gardens that grow a variety of edible crops, flowers, herbs, and perennials
Required Qualifications
● Commitment to and interest in the CitySprouts mission
● 3+ years working with young people, ideally middle school students, as an educator or youth development professional
● Experience working with under-resourced schools and communities
● Ability to cultivate relationships with schools and community partners
● Strong interpersonal skills with youth, families, and peers that reflect cultural sensitivity, respect for differences, deep listening and clear communication
● Ability and desire to work independently and as part of a team
● Effective communication and presentation skills
● Detail-oriented, creative, resourceful, and ready to problem solve
● Ability to design hands-on nature and garden-based STEM curriculum for youth
● Committed to on-going learning and growth as an educator/youth worker
● Readiness to do physical work outside, undeterred by inclement weather
Desired Qualifications
● Experience leading afterschool and summer programs
● Experience in program design
● Multilingual, Spanish preferred
● Gardening skills
