The Engine is looking for motivated, fast-paced individuals to join our team and who are excited to help build a tough tech community in our new facility. We are hiring for a Late July start date. 

 

About The Engine:

The Engine opened its doors in June of 2017 to founders of early-stage companies working on disruptive technology. Founded by MIT, The Engine’s mission is to provide capital, resources, and comprehensive support to help founders build the next generation of world-changing companies. We recently opened a new 155,000 SF building in Central Square, Cambridge in September 2022.  Our building includes offices, meeting spaces, bio & chem labs, and maker/fabrication space.

 

What is a Lab Operations Technician?

We are seeking a creative and motivated Lab Technician to assist in day-to-day lab operations and serve as the daily contact for lab requests at our new facility. The Lab Technician will have the primary responsibility for ensuring the labs, equipment, offices, and building systems are running in an operative, clean, and efficient manner. Working closely with the Lab Operations Manager, additional responsibilities will focus on building a wider platform for resident space planning, lab operations assistance, and overall infrastructure to better serve the people and companies at The Engine. 

Areas of Responsibility

  • Provide day-to-day laboratory operations support (consumables inventory, laboratory housekeeping, general management)
  • Support the Laboratory Operations Managers and resident companies with as needed laboratory tasks and special projects
  • Work with resident companies and Engine EHS to ensure hazardous material compliance and inventory
  • Provide equipment maintenance and troubleshooting support as needed
  • Maintain laboratory facilities and general cleanliness
  • Laboratory operational support as needed

Qualifications of an ideal candidate

  • Mission-oriented, energetic and upbeat with the resilience and demeanor to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment, while remaining calm and composed
  • Effective communication skills
  • Highly value teamwork
  • Ability to prioritize work, organize and handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Interface with residents of The Engine at all levels
  • Take ownership over tasks and follow them through to completion
  • Detail-oriented and very organized, with solid time management skills
  • Independent, reliable, and willing to learn
  • Appropriately social with fellow team members, guests, and staff

Additional Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in life sciences, preferred Biology or Chemistry
  • 1-3 years of experience in a lab environment
  • Project Management skills preferred
  • Clear written communication
  • Strong organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
